Do sharks eat humans?

In general, sharks do not eat humans. This is because humans are not part of their natural diet. Although they are often portrayed as fierce animals, in reality most shark species prefer to prey on small fish, invertebrates, and even marine mammals. Among the more than 300 species that exist, only about a dozen types of sharks have been recorded to attack humans.

Sharks can indeed attack humans, but this usually happens due to curiosity or misidentification. For example, when seeing humans swimming or playing in the water, the splashing movements can be misinterpreted by sharks as prey.

However, researchers emphasize that there is no real evidence of sharks actively hunting humans. In fact, according to some experts, sharks tend to ignore the presence of humans in the sea. So, despite having the ability to injure, sharks are generally not interested in considering humans as food.

What do sharks eat in the sea?

As a diverse group of sea predators, sharks have a very varied diet as well. Most sharks eat marine animals such as small fish, crustaceans (crabs, shrimp), mollusks, and even marine mammals like seals and dolphins. Some species of sharks even prey on other sharks. For example, the bull shark is known to eat other sharks. There are also species of sharks known as opportunistic feeders, such as the tiger shark ( tiger shark ).

This sea creature is nicknamed the "trash can of the sea" because it tends to eat almost anything, whether living animals or carcasses. Its diet can be very diverse, ranging from sea turtles, sea snakes, sea birds, to unusual objects such as tires, vehicle plates, and even human clothing. Interestingly, sharks can also survive without eating for weeks. In fact, there are records of some sharks fasting for up to 15 months.

The most dangerous shark in the world

Although most sharks are not dangerous to humans, there are several species that are known to be more aggressive and are often involved in attack incidents. Here are three sharks considered the most dangerous in the world:

1. Great white shark (white big teeth)

Hiu putih besar ( White shark ) occupies the top spot in the number of attacks on humans. Specifically, there have been more than 350 unprovoked attacks, with 57 of them resulting in fatalities. Despite its fame from films, Jaws , this is actually more curious than a human predator.

Not only that, this shark often bites to try prey. However, it usually does not continue because humans are not suitable food for it. The white shark prefers fatter prey such as seals or sea lions.

1. Tiger shark (tiger hiu)

Recognized as the "trash bin of the sea", tiger sharks ( Galeocerdo cuvier ) eating almost anything. For example, even sea turtles to unusual items like paint cans. Its opportunistic nature and large appetite make this shark more likely to swallow prey entirely, including if it bites a human. With its elastic jaw and sharp teeth that can chew hard objects, the tiger shark becomes a serious threat when it starts attacking.

1. Bull shark (hiu banteng)

Hiu banteng ( Carcharhinus leucas ) recorded in more than 100 attacks on humans and at least 26 of them were fatal. One reason this shark is dangerous is because it is capable of living in both salt and fresh water.

This species of shark is often found in rivers or shallow waters, where humans usually swim. Its aggressive and territorial nature makes this shark potentially attack without the victim being aware.

So, do sharks eat humans? The answer is not as simple as one might imagine. However, one thing is certain, we are not the primary target of these sea creatures.
